Puppy Training Challenge: It will be a beautiful weekend for a picnic. Get your picnic basket ready with some tasty treats both canine and human. Bring your red and white checkered blanket and spend the afternoon at the park. Parks are great places for teaching self control. Can the puppy stay on the blanket (attached to a human) while kids play, squirrels run by, and as you eat your lunch.
Puppy Raising Tip: Honoring Memorial Day
Memorial Day weekend is an opportunity to honor our military men and women. To all of our puppy raisers that served our country, thank you.
Here are some tips to successfully navigate this busy weekend.
- Going to friends or family for a party, bring a crate.
- Please leave puppies at home when attending parades, fireworks displays, and concerts.
- Remember that puppies should be on leash unless in an enclosed yard.
- Teaching a puppy to swim in a pool is fine. Please teach the puppy to exit the pool, and always supervise the puppy around an open pool.
- Spring clean up is happening in neighborhoods across the country. This is a perfect opportunity to socialize the puppy to all the sight sounds and smells of neighborhood happenings. Example: Lawn mowers, sprinklers, people gardening, bee keepers, kids rollerskating and skate boarding, etc.
- Even though you might be distracted at your family picnic, please remember to keep an eye on the puppy and how other family members are handling the puppy. Remember it is never wrong to put the puppy in the crate.
